Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs ShutThe following Tuesday, the courtroom was packed once again for what was expected to be a dramatic plea and settlement hearing. Daniel was brought in wearing his orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed, but a arrogant, desperate smile played on his face. He believed he had finally forced Emma into a corner.

Margaret and Ashley sat in the front row of the gallery, looking pale and wearing cheap clothes, having sold their designer wardrobes to pay for their legal defense.

Emma walked down the aisle, looking elegant in an emerald-green dress. She took her seat at the table alongside Arthur.

Judge Vance presided over the bench. "We are here to consider a conditional property transfer agreement between Daniel Vance and Emma Miller, which includes a request from the defense for a recommended sentence reduction regarding Count 1: Domestic Battery."

Richard Sterling stood up confidently. "Your Honor, my client has agreed to relinquish all legal rights, title, and interest in the multi-million-dollar Maine estate back to Mrs. Miller. In exchange, Mrs. Miller has agreed not to pursue personal victim impact statements during sentencing for the battery charge."

"Is this correct, Mrs. Miller?" Judge Vance asked, looking down over his glasses at Emma.

Emma stood up smoothly. "It is true that Mr. Vance has offered to sign over the quitclaim deed to the Maine property today, Your Honor."

"Good," Daniel muttered under his breath at the defense table, leaning back in his chair with a triumphant look at his attorney. "Sign the paper, bitch."

"However," Emma continued, her voice ringing clear throughout the entire courtroom, "before Mr. Vance signs that document, I would like to submit a vital piece of evidence regarding the Maine trust structure into the court record."

Sterling frowned, jumping to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! The terms of the agreement were negotiated in good faith—"

"Overruled," Judge Vance stated sternly. "Let her speak."

Emma stepped forward, handing a certified document to the court clerk.

"When my father created the Maine Property Trust fifteen years ago," Emma explained, "he included an explicit 'Bad Actor' clause. That clause states that if any co-trustee attempts to leverage, sell, or bargain trust property through illegal means, extortion, or coercion, their rights as a trustee are automatically revoked, and their attempted signature constitutes an explicit confession of interstate property fraud."

Daniel’s smile instantly vanished. His face went stark white. "What?" he gasped.

"In short," Emma said, turning around to look Daniel directly in his terrified eyes, "by offering to trade that property in exchange for dropping criminal charges, Daniel didn't just lose his claim to the house—he just committed a brand-new federal crime of Extortion and Witness Tampering on the official court record."

The courtroom erupted into instant chaos. Journalists stood up to shout questions, while Margaret let out a horrific shriek from the gallery, collapsing back into her seat.

"You trap-setting monster!" Daniel shrieked, lunging across the defense table toward Emma, his handcuffs rattling violently. "You set me up! You set me up!"

Two bailiffs immediately tackled Daniel to the carpeted floor, pinning his arms behind his back as he thrashed and screamed obscenities.

Judge Vance slammed his gavel repeatedly, his face red with absolute rage. "Order! Order in this court! Mr. Vance, shut your mouth immediately or I will hold you in contempt!"

Once Daniel was forced back into his chair, breathing heavily and trembling with blind fury, Judge Vance looked at the defense team with deep disgust.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said coldly. "Your client’s attempt to manipulate this court and extort the victim in open court is the most egregious display of bad faith I have ever witnessed. The property transfer agreement is hereby voided, the Maine estate is fully restored to Mrs. Miller's sole name under the trust clause, and Mr. Vance will face additional federal charges for witness extortion."

Judge Vance looked directly at Daniel. "Bail is revoked entirely. You will remain in custody until your trial."

As the guards pulled Daniel up from the floor to drag him back to the holding block, he looked at Emma. She stood perfectly still, looking at him with neither hatred nor anger—only total, absolute triumph.
