Chapter 4 - The Assistant's TrapAt 8:00 AM the following morning, the morning sun broke over the city, casting a brilliant golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Emma’s corner office downtown. The space had been stripped of Daniel’s influence over the last twelve hours; his portrait had been removed from the waiting lobby, and his access badges had been revoked city-wide.

Emma sat behind her desk, sipping hot black coffee. The dark purple bruise on her cheek was neatly concealed under a light layer of medical concealer, but she didn't care if people saw it. It was no longer a symbol of her shame—it was evidence of her survival.

The glass doors of the reception area clicked open.

Chloe walked in, wearing a sleek designer dress, carrying a brand-new leather handbag, and humming a light tune. She was holding a rolling carry-on suitcase, clearly planning to slip out early for her "Miami vacation."

"Good morning, Emma!" Chloe said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she walked toward her desk. "I just stopped by to drop off the weekly schedule before I leave for that conference in Florida."

Emma didn't answer. She simply leaned back in her chair, watching Chloe with calm, unblinking eyes.

Chloe stopped mid-stride, noticing the heavy silence in the office. Her eyes darted to the two men standing near the executive conference room door—two plainclothes officers holding official legal envelopes.

"Is... is everything okay?" Chloe asked, her smile faltering slightly. "You look tired, Emma."

"I slept better last night than I have in three years, Chloe," Emma said smoothly. "How was your evening?"

"Oh, fine. Just packing for my trip," Chloe replied, her fingers tightening nervously around the handle of her suitcase. "Listen, if you don't need me for anything else, my flight leaves in two hours..."

"You're not going to Miami, Chloe," Emma said softly, sliding a thick document across the desk.

Chloe lowered her eyes to the paper. It was a copy of the emergency asset restraint order, along with a formal criminal summons listing her as a co-defendant in a grand larceny conspiracy. Attached to the back were printed, high-resolution screenshots of her intimate text messages with Daniel, complete with dates, times, and bank transfer routing numbers.

Chloe’s face turned ghostly pale. Her knees buckled slightly, and she had to reach out to hold the corner of the desk to keep her balance.

"Emma... I... this isn't what it looks like," Chloe stammered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "Daniel forced me! He threatened to fire me if I didn't help him! He told me you were going mad and that he was just trying to protect the company!"

Emma stood up slowly, leaning both hands on her desk, bringing her face close to Chloe’s.

"He forced you to take thirty thousand dollars of my money for a Cartier watch?" Emma whispered, her tone sharper than a razor. "He forced you to send him texts asking when I would 'finally kick the bucket' so you could move into my house?"

Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked around frantically, but the two officers stepped forward, cutting off her path to the exit.

"You took my kindness, Chloe. You took my mentorship, my trust, and my money," Emma said, her voice cold and absolute. "And in return, you helped a monster try to destroy my life. Today, you pay the bill."

"Miss Chloe Miller," one of the officers said, stepping up behind her and producing a set of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for criminal conspiracy, grand theft, and computer fraud."

"No! Emma, please!" Chloe cried out as the metal cuffs clicked around her wrists, her pristine designer façade shattering into pathetic sobbing. "I’ll tell them everything! I’ll testify against Daniel! Just please don't let them take me to jail!"

"You will testify, Chloe," Emma said, turning her back to her as she looked out over the city skyline. "Because if you don't, you'll be spending the next ten years in a state penitentiary right beside him."

As the officers led the weeping assistant out of the building, Emma pulled out her phone. A notification flashed on the screen: a message from Arthur.

Daniel's bail hearing is set for 2:00 PM. His lawyer is trying to get him released on personal recognizance. We need to be in that courtroom.

Emma closed her phone, grabbed her coat, and walked out the door. The hunt was just beginning.
