Chapter 2 - Served HotThe heavy wooden doors swung open, and Emma stepped back into the dining room. Her gait was smooth, deliberate, and entirely devoid of the hesitation she had feigned for months. The three people seated around her dining table barely looked up as she approached, too absorbed in their own self-congratulatory chatter.

"It's about time," Margaret sneered, smoothing the front of her lapels. "A proper hostess doesn't keep her family waiting. I hope you remembered the grated parmesan."
"Oh, I remembered everything, Margaret," Emma said gently.
She stood at the head of the table, directly opposite Daniel. She lowered the massive silver platter into the exact center of the table with a soft, heavy thud that caused the wineglasses to rattle.
Daniel frowned, looking down at the covered platter with a mixture of confusion and growing irritation. "What is this, Emma? Where are the noodles?"
"This is better than pasta, Daniel," Emma replied, her eyes fixing onto his with an intensity that made him visibly pull back. "This is a dish we’ve all been preparing for six long months."
"Stop playing games," Ashley snapped, rolling her eyes. "I'm starving, and I have a date in an hour. Lift the cover."
"With pleasure."
Emma reached out, wrapped her fingers around the silver handle of the cloche, and lifted it high into the air, setting it aside on a sideboard.
The dining table was instantly covered in neat, organized piles of paper, glossy photos, bank statements highlighted in bright neon yellow, and right in the middle, a bright crimson lace bra.
Silence descended upon the room like a heavy anvil.
Margaret’s jaw dropped open. She reached out a manicured hand, her fingers trembling as she picked up the top sheet of paper. It was a certified bank audit showing thirty-two separate wire transfers from Emma’s business account into an offshore account bearing Margaret's maiden name.
"What... what is the meaning of this?" Margaret gasped, her face draining of all color. "This is private information! How did you get this?"
"Private?" Emma chuckled, a dark, melodic sound. "You used my company's tax ID number to forge those transfers, Margaret. That’s not private—that’s a federal felony."
Ashley grabbed a handful of receipts lying near her plate. Her eyes widened in sheer panic as she saw itemized lists of high-end clothing, resort stays, and luxury spa treatments, all stamped with her signature alongside a copy of the stolen corporate card she had been using.
"Daniel!" Ashley shrieked, jumping out of her chair. "She has my receipts! She has everything!"
Daniel stood up so fast his chair fell backward, clattering against the hardwood floor. His face flushed a deep, furious red as he stared at the center of the platter, where the red bra sat atop a stack of printed text messages between himself and Chloe.
"You've been spying on me?" Daniel roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "You ungrateful little bitch! Do you have any idea what I’ve done for you? I took care of you after your father died! I managed your life!"
"You managed to steal three million dollars," Emma corrected smoothly, stepping closer to the table without an ounce of fear. "You managed to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement. And tonight..." She raised a finger to touch the bruise purpling on her cheek, "...you managed to commit felony domestic assault on camera."
Daniel’s eyes darted to the top corner of the room, noticing for the very first time the tiny, blinking red light of a newly installed security camera hidden inside the crown molding.
"You think a camera scares me?" Daniel sneered, though a faint sweat was beginning to glisten on his forehead. "This is my house. I control the network. I'll delete the footage, take the keys, and put you in a clinic by tomorrow morning. You have nothing!"
"That’s where you’re wrong, Daniel," Emma said softly. "This house was bought by my grandfather in 1982. The deed has always been in my name. The prenuptial agreement you signed specifically excludes pre-marital real estate. You don't own a single brick of this building."
"You crazy—" Daniel lunged forward across the table, his hand raised once again to strike her into silence.
Before his fingers could even graze her air space, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion were blown open with a thunderous crack.
"POLICE! DON'T MOVE!"
A squad of five uniformed officers, accompanied by two suits from the Financial Crimes Unit, flooded into the grand entryway, their weapons drawn and tactical flashlights blinding the room.
Daniel froze mid-stride, his arm suspended in the air. Margaret let out a high-pitched shriek, dropping her wineglass, which shattered into a hundred pieces across the floor. Ashley shrank back into her chair, bursting into hysterical tears.
Detective Vance, a broad-shouldered man with a severe posture, stepped into the dining room, holding a freshly signed judicial warrant.
"Daniel Vance," the detective called out, his voice booming through the room. "Step away from the victim immediately and put your hands behind your back."
"This is a mistake!" Daniel shouted, his voice cracking as the bravado drained out of him in real-time. "This is a domestic dispute! My wife is mentally unstable! She’s hallucinating!"
"Save it for your arraignment, Mr. Vance," Detective Vance replied coldly, signaling his officers. Two officers moved in swiftly, grabbing Daniel’s arms and forcing him down onto the table, right on top of the printouts of his intimate text messages. The metallic snap of handcuffs echoed loudly through the room.
"Margaret Vance and Ashley Vance," Detective Vance continued, pulling a second set of documents from his coat. "You are both under arrest as co-conspirators in grand theft, bank fraud, and illegal destruction of financial records."
"You can't arrest me!" Margaret screamed as an officer pulled her out of her chair, twisting her arms behind her cream suit. "Do you know who I am? My family built this town's charity network! Emma, tell them! Tell them it's a joke!"
May you like
Emma stood at the edge of the table, her hands folded neatly in front of her. She looked Margaret dead in the eye, her expression as cold as ice.
"The joke's over, Margaret," Emma said softly. "And dinner is officially served."
