Chapter 5 - The Bail Hearing ShockThe grand courtroom of the Municipal District Court was packed to capacity. Local reporters, tipped off by the dramatic midnight arrest at one of the city's most prominent estates, sat in the gallery with notebooks and camera pens ready.

Daniel sat at the defense table wearing an oversized orange jump suit, his hands cuffed at his waist. Without his tailored suits and expensive hair products, he looked surprisingly small, angry, and disheveled. Beside him sat his high-priced defense attorney, Richard Sterling, a man known for getting wealthy criminals off on technicalities.
Across the aisle, Emma sat silently beside Arthur Pendelton, wearing a crisp black suit, her head held high.
"All rise!" the bailiff called out as Judge Harold Vance took the bench.
Judge Vance was an elderly man with stern eyes and a reputation for zero tolerance regarding financial predators and domestic abusers. He adjusted his glasses and looked down at the case file before him.
"We are here for the bail hearing of Daniel Vance, Margaret Vance, and Ashley Vance," the judge announced. "Mr. Sterling, I have read your petition for immediate release on personal recognizance. Care to explain why I should consider this given the severity of the charges?"
Sterling stood up, straightening his silk tie. "Your Honor, my clients are respected members of this community with deep local ties. The allegations brought forth by Mrs. Emma Vance are nothing more than a bitter, vindictive exaggeration stemming from a routine marital disagreement. My client, Daniel, is a prominent businessman who poses absolutely no flight risk."
"Bitter disagreement?" Arthur Pendelton stood up, addressing the bench with calm authority. "Your Honor, if I may submit Exhibit A."
Arthur brought a tablet to the clerk, which was instantly synced to the monitors mounted around the courtroom.
The screen flickered to life, showing the clear 4K footage from the previous night's dinner. The entire courtroom watched in stunned silence as Daniel's hand cracked across Emma's face, followed by Margaret’s cold remark about 'discipline' and Ashley’s cruel snicker. The audio played with terrifying clarity through the courtroom speakers.
A collective gasp echoed through the public gallery. Reporters began scribbling frantically in their notebooks.
Daniel’s face flushed bright red, his jaw working silently as he glared across the room at Emma.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Arthur continued, "we have verified proof that late yesterday afternoon, prior to his arrest, Mr. Vance attempted to liquidate two million dollars from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands—an account created using forged documentation from his wife's business."
Judge Vance’s face turned to stone. He slammed his folder shut, the sound echoing like a thunderclap through the room.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "Your definition of a 'routine marital disagreement' is appalling. The video evidence clearly demonstrates physical violence, emotional abuse, and an ongoing, calculated attempt to defraud the victim."
"Your Honor, please—" Sterling tried to interject.
"Silence!" Judge Vance barked. "Regarding the defendant, Daniel Vance: bail is set at five million dollars, cash only. Should he manage to post bail, he will be placed under strict house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor, and a permanent protection order will be issued immediately."
Margaret let out a loud sob from the row behind the defense table where she was seated under guard.
"As for Margaret Vance and Ashley Vance," the judge continued, "bail is set at one million dollars each. All passports are to be surrendered to the court within two hours. Court adjourned!"
The judge slammed his gavel down.
As the bailiffs moved in to lead Daniel away back to the holding cells, Daniel leaned over toward Emma, his eyes wide with unhinged fury.
"You think this makes you strong, Emma?" he spat, his voice low and venomous. "You’re nothing without my family! You’ll rot in that empty house alone!"

Emma stood up slowly, looking down at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated pity.
"The only thing rotting, Daniel," Emma whispered back, "is your future. Enjoy your cell."
