Chapter 9 - The Handcuff VerdictSix months later, the federal trial of United States v. Richard and Blake Donovan concluded at the U.S. District Court downtown.

Faced with the undeniable digital ledgers, chat logs, and wire transfers Emma had provided, both men pleaded guilty to avoid a longer sentence.

Richard Donovan was sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for corporate tax fraud and money laundering.

Blake Donovan was sentenced to eight years in federal prison for wire fraud and conspiracy.

In addition, the court ordered full financial restitution, stripping Blake of his trust fund and allocating a multi-million-dollar child support settlement directly to Emma for Lily’s raising and education.

On the morning of sentencing, Emma sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a simple, elegant dark blue dress, holding six-month-old Lily in her lap.

Blake sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands chained at his waist, his face hollow, gaunt, and completely broken.
