THE SHADOWS OF VALE HOUSE / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Corporate Trap

By dawn, federal investigators and local police swarmed Vale House. Julian Vance, attempting to board a private corporate jet at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport carrying fraudulent transfer documents, was intercepted on the tarmac by federal agents and slapped in handcuffs.

Back at the mansion, Cynthia was escorted out in federal custody, her designer suit wrinkled and her composure completely shattered. The ledger entries, the shell companies, and the illegal wire transfers were meticulously mapped out by forensic accountants, proving that Julian and Cynthia—working in tandem with Diane Mercer—had systematically looted millions over five years, banking on the assumption that Ethan’s physical disability and fierce isolation would keep him permanently in the dark.

Ethan sat in his study overlooking the sunlit courtyard, watching the federal vehicles depart down the gravel drive. He looked exhausted, yet for the first time in over a decade, the lines of chronic stress around his eyes had relaxed.

He wheeled himself over to where Maggie stood organizing the recovered files. "You saved my life twice in two weeks, Maggie," Ethan said softly, his gray eyes shining with profound, unreserved gratitude. "First from the water... and now from my own blindness."

"I just opened the ledger, Mr. Vale," Maggie smiled gently. "You were the one who had the courage to read it."
