Chapter 10 - The Midnight Visitor

At 2:15 a.m., Maggie was jolted awake by a soft, metallic scraping sound outside her bedroom door. She slipped quietly out of bed, creeping across the dark hardwood floor toward the hallway. Through the dim moonlight filtering through the high arched windows, she saw a shadowy figure picking the digital lock of Ethan’s private study at the far end of the east wing.
It wasn't a burglar looking for silver or jewelry; it was someone hunting for the physical ledgers Maggie had brought up from the basement.
Silently, Maggie pulled out her mobile phone, dialed the emergency intercom code for Ethan’s bedroom, and whispered urgently into the receiver: "Someone is breaking into your study right now."
Within seconds, the heavy motorized wheels of Ethan’s custom chair hummed quietly down the corridor. As the intruder successfully forced the study door open and stepped inside, snapping on a small penlight, Ethan rolled around the corner, blocking the exit entirely.

"Looking for something, Cynthia?" Ethan’s voice cut through the darkness like a razor blade.
The flashlight beam trembled, illuminating Cynthia standing by the mahogany desk with a leather briefcase in her hand, her face contorted in sheer panic.
