Chapter 8 - An Unexpected Invitation

Three days after the confrontation in the service corridor, the Onyx Room was humming with its usual sophisticated evening energy. The jazz quartet was playing a smooth, melancholic tune near the back bar, clinking glasses echoed softly against marble tabletops, and the rich aroma of roasted garlic and fine wine drifted from the kitchen. Clara Bennett moved gracefully among the tables, delivering orders with a renewed confidence and a posture that radiated quiet strength. The heavy, nervous hunch in her shoulders was entirely gone, replaced by an unshakeable poise that hadn't been seen since her college days. Around 8:30 PM, the heavy oak front doors swung open, and Arthur Moretti stepped into the dining room, accompanied by Paul. True to his unvarying routine, Arthur walked directly toward his usual corner booth. But as he prepared to sit down, his pale gray eyes locked onto Clara as she walked past with a tray of empty glassware. He paused for a fraction of a second, then raised his hand slightly—not with the imperious snap of a demanding customer, but with the polite deference of an invited guest. Clara immediately walked over to his table, a warm, genuine smile lighting up her features. “Good evening, Mr. Moretti. Welcome back to the Onyx Room.” Arthur offered a subtle, approving nod, taking a seat on the leather bench. “Good evening, Clara. How are your throat and your peace of mind?” “Both are entirely healed,” she replied softly, resting her order pad against her apron. “In fact... I received word this morning that a certain persistent problem of mine has permanently relocated far away from Chicago.” Arthur’s expression remained an unreadable mask, though a faint, approving gleam danced in his eyes. “Some problems simply require the correct administrative adjustment to ensure long-term stability.” “Well, your administrative adjustment saved my life,” Clara said sincerely. She hesitated for a moment, her fingers lightly tapping the edge of her order pad before she gathered her courage. “My shift ends at midnight tonight. The kitchen closes at eleven. Would... would you allow me to buy you a glass of your preferred twelve-year Scotch after my shift is over, to properly thank you?” Paul, standing quietly a few paces behind Arthur’s shoulder, stiffened slightly at the breach of protocol, expecting his employer to politely decline as he always did with civilian entanglements. Instead, Arthur looked directly into Clara’s bright blue eyes, considering the invitation with profound attention. “I never turn down good company, Clara,” Arthur replied smoothly. “I will be waiting right here at midnight.”
