Chapter 14 - The Promise Kept

Following the conclusion of the formal gala speeches and the overwhelming success of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Clara and Arthur retreated to the private glass-enclosed rooftop terrace overlooking the illuminated Chicago skyline. The city stretched out before them like a vast sea of diamonds, the crisp autumn wind whispering softly against the glass walls. Arthur walked over to the edge of the terrace, resting his hands on the polished stone railing. Clara joined him, leaning her shoulder gently against his arm as they watched the tourist boats drift peacefully along the river far below. Without turning his head, Arthur reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, dark leather velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee with dramatic flair or rehearsed speeches; that theatricality belonged to men who needed words to mask their intentions. Instead, he simply turned toward her, opened the lid, and revealed a breathtaking platinum ring set with a brilliant, flawless emerald-cut diamond flanked by two smaller sapphires. “I spent many years believing that protecting the people I loved meant keeping them hidden away in the dark, safe from the storms of the world,” Arthur said, his voice deep, steady, and intensely emotional. “I was wrong. True protection means building a foundation strong enough to let you stand entirely in the light, where the whole world can see your brilliance.” He looked directly into her eyes. “Will you share this light with me permanently, Clara? Will you build our entire future together?” Tears of pure, unadulterated joy welled in Clara’s eyes as she looked at the man who had pulled her out of the darkest corridor of her life and handed her the keys to the city. She didn't hesitate for a single second. “Yes, Arthur,” she whispered, her voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable certainty. “Always.”
