Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Nolan Price

While Clara rode comfortably toward her morning obligations, Nolan Price was experiencing a very different kind of morning in a cramped, disheveled studio apartment on the far North Side. Waking up with a splitting chemical hangover and a mouth tasting like stale ash, Nolan reached blindly across his nightstand for his cell phone. When he picked it up, the screen was completely frozen—every single social media account, banking app, and encrypted messaging platform he used had been locked out with administrative security warnings. Panicking, he leaped out of bed and rushed toward his closet to grab his spare cash stash, only to find the floorboards pried open and empty. Suddenly, three heavy knocks echoed against his front door, followed immediately by the sound of the deadbolt clicking open with a master key. Before Nolan could turn around, two heavy-set men in dark suits stepped smoothly into the apartment, closing the door firmly behind them. They didn't shout or draw weapons; their terrifying calmness was far more intimidating than any display of tactical aggression. “Nolan Price?” the lead man asked, his voice entirely flat and devoid of emotion. “W-who the hell are you?” Nolan stammered, backing away until his spine hit the kitchen counter. “What is this?” The enforcer slid a manila folder across the counter, flipping it open to reveal an exhaustive catalog of Nolan’s life: forged employment records, unpaid drug debts owed to violent west-side dealers, tax evasion documents, and irrefutable digital evidence of his harassment and assault charges against Clara Bennett. “This is a comprehensive summary of your current existence,” the enforcer replied smoothly. “Mr. Moretti has reviewed your file. You have exactly two hours to pack whatever fits into a single duffel bag, purchase a one-way bus ticket out of the state of Illinois, and never return to Chicago. If you are spotted anywhere within Cook County after noon today, these documents will be forwarded directly to federal prosecutors, and your debt collectors will be informed of your exact coordinates.” Nolan’s face drained of all color, his lips trembling as he stared at the absolute proof of his total destruction. He knew with terrifying certainty that arguing was pointless, fighting was suicidal, and defiance was fatal. Within ninety minutes, Nolan Price boarded a Greyhound bus heading west across the state line, clutching a single cheap duffel bag, permanently erased from the city and from Clara’s life forever.
