Chapter 1 - The Threshold of the Onyx Room

The air inside the service corridor behind Chicago’s exclusive Onyx Room was thick with the scent of melted ice, spent cooking oil, and old metal. By the time Nolan Price wrapped his pale, trembling fingers around Clara Bennett’s throat, Arthur Moretti had already decided precisely how the night would end. Nolan believed they were entirely hidden from the world, convinced that the smooth, throbbing jazz playing beyond the heavy kitchen doors would effortlessly swallow Clara’s muffled cries. He believed the terrified young woman pinned against the cold steel of the walk-in freezer was still the submissive creature who had spent five agonizing years apologizing for simply breathing too loudly or making him angry. He was dead wrong on all three counts. Arthur Moretti stood just on the other side of the swinging doors, watching every movement through a narrow, unvarnished gap in the wood. He did not look angry; men of Arthur's standing and absolute power did not waste precious energy on visible, uncontrolled outbursts of temper. His face became an absolute mask of stone, his breathing slowed to a rhythmic crawl, and his pale gray eyes fixed with terrifying intensity on Nolan’s knuckles as they whitened around Clara’s neck. Then Nolan raised his free hand to strike her. The doors flew open with such violent force that one of them slammed loudly against the tiled wall, echoing through the corridor. “Take your hand off her,” Arthur commanded. His voice was quiet, almost conversational, yet it possessed a chilling gravity that seemed to drain every other ambient sound from the room. Nolan spun around in a panic, his rain-soaked blond hair plastered to his forehead, his jaw swollen from a recent street fight, and his pupils dilated from a toxic mix of alcohol and chemical stimulants. Arthur, thirty-nine, stood six-foot-three in an immaculate charcoal suit that fit like a suit of armor, a thin scar slicing cleanly through his left eyebrow. Though he had stepped into the Onyx Room alone, everyone in the city who understood true authority knew that Arthur Moretti was never, under any circumstances, truly alone. Nolan, blinded by arrogance and chemical haze, saw only an older man in an expensive suit interrupting what he delusionally considered private business. “This doesn’t concern you, old man,” Nolan snapped, his voice cracking with artificial bravado. “Go back to your drink.” Arthur took a single, deliberate step forward, his polished shoe clicking sharply against the tile. “Remove your hand from her neck. Now.” “She’s my girlfriend,” Nolan snarled, tightening his grip. “I am not,” Clara choked out, her fingernails clawing desperately at Nolan’s wrist as she gasped for oxygen. A cold, ancient shadow passed across Arthur’s features. “You have exactly three seconds,” he whispered. Nolan laughed nervously. “Or what?” “One.” “Do you even know who you’re talking to?” “Two.” At that exact moment, the drug-induced haze finally fractured behind Nolan’s eyes as he stared into Arthur's freezing gaze, realizing with sudden, crushing dread that he was looking not at a businessman playing tough, but at a genuinely dangerous man masquerading as one. Nolan instantly released Clara, shoving her aside so hard she collided with the freezer door, coughing and clutching her bruised throat. “Happy?” Nolan barked, trying to back away toward the alley exit. “Now stay out of it.” Before Nolan could take another step, Arthur’s hand shot out with blinding speed, catching Nolan by the wrist, twisting his arm behind his back, and slamming his chest flat against a stainless-steel prep table with a shriek of metal. Leaning close to Nolan’s ear, Arthur delivered a quiet warning that froze the blood in the younger man's veins. “You entered through a locked service door, assaulted an employee, and threatened her safety. You are receiving your final warning.” As two silent men in dark coats materialized from the alley shadows behind him, Nolan fled into the cold Chicago rain, realizing he had just crossed a line from which there was no return.
