Chapter 6 - The Federal Warrant

"What... what is that?" Calvin stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched tremor.
"Over the past eighteen months, CEO Calvin Mercer has embezzled 1.1 million dollars from Vanguard's bonded escrow accounts," I announced into the silent room. "He established dummy freight brokerage shells in Delaware and transferred corporate capital to the Cayman Islands to evade federal logistics tariffs."
Stephanie looked at Calvin in growing panic. "Calvin... what is she talking about? You told me that offshore account was our future family trust!"
"Shut up, Stephanie!" Calvin roared, slamming both fists onto the mahogany table.
Before anyone could move, the boardroom double doors were pushed open by two armed federal marshals and Special Agent Miller from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division.
"Calvin Mercer," Special Agent Miller announced, flashing his badge and unrolling a federal arrest warrant. "You are under arrest pursuant to an indictment issued by the Grand Jury for the Northern District of Illinois, charging you with twelve counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and felony money laundering."
"No! This is a corporate misunderstanding!" Calvin screamed, stumbling backward as two marshals grabbed his arms, forcing him face-down onto the conference table.
The crystal water glasses rattled as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around Calvin's wrists.
"Stephanie Davis," Agent Miller added, turning to the trembling woman beside him. "You are named as an unindicted co-conspirator and recipient of diverted corporate assets. Hand over your phone and purse."
"Me?!" Stephanie shrieked, breaking into hysterical sobs. "I didn't know anything! I just loved him! Calvin, tell them!"
Calvin didn't look at her. He stared at the floor in humiliated silence as the federal agents hauled him to his feet and marched him past the row of stunned board members.
As Calvin passed my chair, he met my eyes one last time.

I sat tall, composed, and untouchable, looking at him with zero pity.
"You told me I wouldn't have a dime to come back to, Calvin," I whispered softly. "Turns out, you won't even have a dime for bail."
