Chapter 5 - The Shareholder Ambush

On Thursday morning at 10:00 AM, the executive boardroom of Vanguard Express on the fortieth floor of the Michigan Avenue tower was filled with twelve minority shareholders, corporate attorneys, and board members.

Calvin sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, dressed in a sharp three-piece bespoke navy suit, radiating the supreme confidence of a man who believed he had outsmarted everyone in his life. Sitting right beside him in an ivory designer dress was Stephanie, acting as his newly appointed "Executive Communications Liaison."

"Thank you all for coming on short notice," Calvin began, smoothing his silk tie. "As many of you know, my wife, Brooke, has unfortunately chosen to step away from personal and professional responsibilities due to emotional instability. In accordance with Section 8 of our operating agreement, I am proposing an immediate resolution to reallocate her voting shares to protect the company's valuation."

"That won't be necessary, Calvin," a clear, resonant voice cut through the room.

The heavy frosted glass doors opened.

I walked into the boardroom wearing a tailored, emerald-green wool suit and black stilettos, my hair styled in sleek, polished waves, carrying a slim leather portfolio.

Calvin’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes widened in shock as every board member turned to look at me.

Stephanie gasped, clutching Calvin’s arm. "Brooke?! You have no right to be in this meeting!"

"I own forty-five percent of the voting equity of this firm, Stephanie," I replied with icy precision, taking the empty chair directly opposite Calvin. "Which is forty-five percent more than a home-wrecking assistant who couldn't even manage her own divorce settlement."

Several board members stifled smirks behind their coffee cups.

"Brooke, leave," Calvin growled, leaning over the table. "You're embarrassing yourself. We're voting on the share reallocation right now."

"Before we vote, Calvin," I said, opening my portfolio and placing a thick sheaf of red-stamped documents before each board member, "the board might be interested in reviewing the forensic audit of Aegis Harbor Ltd."

Calvin froze. Every drop of blood drained from his face until his skin looked like chalk.
