Chapter 4 - The Trap at Vanguard

By 8:00 AM, I sat in the private conference room of Sterling & Miller LLP, opposite David Sterling, one of the most formidable white-collar criminal defense and corporate litigators in the state.
David reviewed the digital paper trail on his tablet, letting out a low, grim whistle.
"Your husband is in catastrophic legal jeopardy, Brooke," David said, sliding the forensic audit across the table. "He hasn't just committed marital fraud; he’s actively participating in a multi-jurisdictional money laundering conspiracy. He diverted commercial freight tariffs from federal bonded warehouses and stashed them in the Cayman account."
"How much time do we have before he moves the rest?" I asked.
"Less than seventy-two hours," David replied. "He scheduled an emergency shareholder meeting for Thursday morning to force a buyout of your remaining forty-five percent voting stock in Vanguard Express."
"He thinks I'm broken and crying in a hotel room," I said, a cold smile touching my lips.
"Then let him keep thinking that," David smiled back. "We just notified the Special Investigations Bureau of the IRS and the Department of Justice. They’ve agreed to let you attend the shareholder meeting wearing a federal wire."
Meanwhile, back at the Highland Park penthouse, Stephanie had already moved her luggage into the master suite.

She spent Wednesday morning drinking vintage champagne on the balcony, posting photos of the panoramic skyline with captions about "new beginnings" and "finding true soulmates." She genuinely believed she had achieved the ultimate high-society promotion.
She had no idea that she was moving into a sinking ship loaded with federal indictments.
