Chapter 9 - A Garden in BloomA year after the trial.

The morning sun broke over the lake, casting long golden rays across the newly completed Vance Estate.
The air was fresh, filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming white roses, jasmine, and fresh lake breeze. The gloomy, oppressive mansion of the past had vanished entirely, replaced by a home filled with light, laughter, and warmth.
I stood on the wide stone terrace overlooking the manicured gardens, holding two warm mugs of fresh coffee.
Across the lawn, Clara was walking through the rose beds, holding the hand of a beautiful, chubby fourteen-month-old little girl with dark, curious eyes and soft brown curls—our daughter, Evelyn.
Evelyn giggled joyfully as a yellow butterfly fluttered past her nose, clapping her small hands together as she took wobbly, energetic steps across the green grass.
“Daddy! Look!” Clara called out, her face glowing with radiant, unbridled happiness as she guided our daughter toward the terrace steps.
I walked down the steps, setting the mugs on a patio table, and lifted little Evelyn high into the air, making her squeal with pure delight.
“Look at you, my little princess,” I laughed, kissing her chubby cheek before pulling Clara into my arm.
We sat together on the outdoor teak sofa, watching the sailboat reflections glide across the calm blue surface of the lake.
Clara leaned her head against my shoulder, her hand resting comfortably over mine. The scars on her hands were completely gone, her skin smooth and glowing under the warm morning sun.
“Do you ever think about that night in the kitchen, Julian?” Clara asked softly, looking out over the water.
May you like
“Only to remind myself how close I came to losing the most precious thing in my life,” I answered truthfully, kissing her temple. “And to thank God that I came home early.”
Clara smiled, turning her face toward mine. “It wasn't the early arrival that saved us, Julian. It was the fact that you looked past the lies and chose to see me.”
