THE SHADOW IN THE KITCHEN / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Boardroom ReckoningWhile the estate was being rebuilt, the corporate battlefield required one final, decisive strike.

Victoria’s remaining allies on the board of directors—three senior executives who had secretly supported her scheme in exchange for promised stock options—attempted to launch a proxy vote to remove me as CEO, claiming the scandal had damaged the company's valuation.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, the annual shareholder meeting was convened at the corporate headquarters.

The boardroom was packed with major investors, legal representatives, and news crews permitted to cover the opening statements.

Board Member Charles Montgomery—a pompous man who had served under my father—cleared his throat, tapping his microphone.

“Mr. Vance,” Montgomery stated arrogantly, “while we sympathize with your personal domestic tragedies, the stock price has fluctuated three percent over the last month. The board feels a change in leadership is necessary to restore market confidence.”

I sat at the head of the table, entirely unbothered. Beside me sat Clara, looking radiant and confident in a tailored white business suit.

“You believe market confidence is shaken, Mr. Montgomery?” I asked smoothly.

“Indeed,” Montgomery smirked. “Unless you can present a major institutional backer to stabilize the shares before noon, we will proceed with the motion to remove you.”

I turned to Clara and gave her a slight nod.

Clara picked up a leather portfolio, opened it, and slid a heavy document into the center of the table.

“This is the official registration of the Clara Vance Sovereign Trust,” Clara spoke, her voice clear, confident, and echoing with absolute authority across the room. “Which currently holds thirty-two percent of all outstanding voting shares in Vance Enterprises—acquired through the liquidation of Victoria Vance’s seized assets and our private capital injections.”

Montgomery’s smirk froze. His face turned bright red. “Thirty-two percent? That's... that's a controlling block!”

“Which means,” I added, leaning forward, “my wife now holds the single largest voting share in this corporation. And her first act as trust director is to call for an immediate vote on your removal, Montgomery.”

The room erupted into applause from the younger board members and independent shareholders.

Montgomery sank into his chair, completely defeated.

Clara looked at him with calm, quiet dignity. “My husband built this company from nothing, Mr. Montgomery. And no one will ever steal it from him again.”
