THE SHADOW IN THE KITCHEN / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - Sentences and ShadowsSix months after the boardroom showdown, the criminal trial of Victoria Vance, Richard Vance, and Dr. Harrison reached its final, dramatic conclusion at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse.

The courtroom was overflowing with spectators and press.

Victoria sat at the defense table in a dull grey prison jumpsuit, her once-immaculate blonde hair graying at the roots, her wrists chained to her waist. Richard sat beside her, looking broken and hollowed out.

When Clara took the witness stand to deliver her victim impact statement, a hush fell over the gallery.

Clara walked up to the microphone with grace and poise. She looked directly at Victoria, showing no fear, no anger—only absolute, unshakeable strength.

“For months, you tried to make me believe I was worthless,” Clara stated, her voice steady and clear. “You used chemical poisons to cloud my mind, and you used cruel lies to make me feel isolated in my own home. You thought my background made me weak. But you forgot one thing, Victoria.”

Clara paused, looking at me where I sat in the front row.

“True strength isn't born from money, titles, or corporate schemes,” Clara continued. “It's born from love, loyalty, and truth. You tried to bury me in the dark. But all you did was show the world who you truly were.”

The judge—a stern, no-nonsense magistrate—looked down at the defense table with undisguised contempt.

“Victoria Vance,” the judge declared, slamming her gavel down with thunderous force. “For the crimes of felony poisoning, corporate conspiracy, and medical endangerment, I sentence you to twenty-five years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.”

“Richard Vance, you are sentenced to fifteen years in state prison.”

“Dr. Harrison, your medical license is permanently revoked, and you are sentenced to twelve years in federal custody.”

As the guards stepped forward to lead a weeping, hysterical Victoria away in chains, she looked toward us one last time, screaming curses into the air.

Clara didn't flinch. She simply took my hand, locking her fingers with mine, and turned her back on the shadows of the past forever.
