Chapter 8 - The Detective Steps Into the Light

Two days after the disastrous birthday dinner, Detective Sarah Miller requested a private briefing at my office in the Manhattan headquarters of Bennett Senior Communities. Sitting across from my mahogany desk, the seasoned detective laid out a thick binder filled with bank statements, encrypted emails, and notarized affidavits. “Mrs. Bennett, your forensic audit team has done half our investigative work for us,” Detective Miller said, opening the folder to reveal a complex web of shell companies. “We’ve uncovered three separate offshore accounts in the Bahamas tied directly to Derek and a woman named Victoria Vance—a high-end real estate broker in Miami who appears to be your son’s primary mistress.” I wasn't even surprised. The revelation hit me with the dull, predictable thud of a rotting floorboard giving way. Derek hadn't just been stealing my money to fund his lavish lifestyle; he had been pouring millions into a secret, double life with a woman who specialized in laundering illicit corporate funds. “How much did they siphon in total, Detective?” I asked, keeping my voice remarkably steady. Detective Miller slid a summary sheet across the desk. “Over 6.8 million dollars from corporate reserves, plus an additional 3.1 million in personal real estate equity lines taken against your primary properties using forged power-of-attorney seals,” she answered grimly. “With these numbers, we aren't just looking at grand larceny and wire fraud anymore. We’re looking at federal racketeering charges that carry a mandatory minimum sentence of fifteen years.” I folded my hands together on the desk, looking out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows toward the bustling streets of Manhattan below. “Make sure every single charge sticks, Detective,” I instructed quietly. “I want no plea bargains, no reduced sentences, and no loopholes. My son chose a path of calculated greed and calculated cruelty. Now he will face the absolute, unyielding letter of the law.” Detective Miller nodded respectfully, gathered her files, and departed, leaving me alone with the quiet realization that justice, though sometimes agonizingly slow, was finally arriving with unstoppable force.
