Chapter 11 - The Locked Vault and the Fake Signatures

Chapter 11 - The Locked Vault and the Fake SignaturesWith Victoria Vance fully cooperating in exchange for a slightly reduced federal sentence recommendation, the investigators finally located the physical safety deposit box hidden in a secure facility in midtown Manhattan where Derek had stashed the original physical documents, counterfeit notary seals, and millions of dollars in liquidated stock certificates. Accompanied by Detective Miller, Arthur Vance, and two bank security officers, I stood before vault number 412 as the heavy steel door was unlocked and swung open. Inside sat a neatly organized collection of my life’s work—falsified corporate bylaws, forged stock transfer certificates bearing clumsy imitations of my signature, and a personal journal where Derek had meticulously planned out his hostile takeover of Bennett Senior Communities. Opening that journal felt like walking through a chamber of horrors. Page after page detailed his growing resentment toward me, complaining that I was “living too long,” that I “refused to step aside gracefully,” and that treating senior citizens in my care homes was a waste of capital that should have been spent on his high-society ambitions. Detective Miller placed a comforting hand gently on my shoulder. “I’m so sorry you have to see this, Mrs. Bennett. No mother should ever have to read the inner thoughts of a betrayer,” she said softly. I gently closed the journal, looking up at the detective with steady, dry eyes. “For many years, Detective, I mourned the son I thought I raised,” I said firmly. “Today, I am simply burying the stranger who tried to destroy everything my residents and I built. Let’s pack these files up. It’s time to present the final, unanswerable proof to the federal judge.”
