Chapter 4 - The Audit That Broke the Billionaire Boy
The frosted-glass doors swung open with a sharp, heavy click. Detective Sergeant Sarah Miller of the Manhattan Financial Crimes Division stepped into the private dining room, flanked by a uniform officer carrying a thick, black-bound dossier. The ambient restaurant chatter died down completely; the other patrons could sense the sudden, suffocating shift in atmosphere. Derek scrambled backward from his chair, his knees knocking against the table leg and spilling a half-full glass of red wine across the pristine white tablecloth. “Mom... what is this? What kind of sick joke are you playing?” Derek stammered, his voice losing its arrogant edge as panic finally took hold. I didn't answer him directly. I gestured toward Detective Miller, who walked purposefully toward our table, bypassing the paralyzed guests until she stood directly beside Derek’s chair. “Derek Bennett,” Detective Miller announced crisply, opening her leather binder. “You are being formally detained for questioning regarding the systematic forging of elderly power-of-attorney documents, wire fraud, and the unauthorized liquidation of Bennett Senior Communities corporate assets totaling 4.2 million dollars.” Kelsey let out a sharp, piercing shriek, dropping her designer smartphone onto the floor where the screen shattered into a spiderweb of glass. “This is insane! We’re her family! She gave us permission!” Kelsey screeched, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at me. I walked slowly around the table, stopping just inches from my daughter-in-law, my expression carved from absolute stone. “Permission to ruin my life, Kelsey? Or permission to steal the retirement funds of the very elderly residents I spent my entire life building homes for?” I asked softly. Derek looked around the room in utter desperation, locking eyes with his wealthy friends who were already quietly gathering their coats and slipping out the side exits without uttering a single word of defense. His multi-million-dollar social safety net had vanished in less than sixty seconds.
