Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Retirement Papers

Detective Miller signaled to the accompanying officer, who stepped forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. Derek lunged backward, his face twisting in desperate defiance. “You can’t arrest me! I’m the CEO of Bennett Holdings! My mother signed those papers herself! She’s senile! Ask any doctor!” he yelled, thrashing wildly as the cold metal cuffs clicked shut around his wrists. I pulled a crisp, folded legal document from my handbag—a certified psychiatric evaluation completed by an independent geriatric neurologist just two days prior, certifying my complete mental acuity and sharp cognitive health. I handed the document directly to Detective Miller. “My son was so thorough in his deception that he actually hired a corrupt notary public to forge my signature on three separate occasions,” I told the room, my voice ringing with absolute clarity. “Unfortunately for Derek, the notary he bribed was already under federal surveillance for mortgage fraud in an entirely unrelated sting operation. The FBI recorded every single meeting where Derek handed over cash envelopes in exchange for backdated signatures.” Kelsey burst into hysterical, frantic tears, grabbing Derek’s arm as the officers began escorting him toward the exit. “Derek, tell them! Tell them you handled everything!” she wailed. Derek cast one last, murderous glare toward me—a look devoid of any familial affection, filled only with the bitter resentment of a spoiled predator who had finally been caught in his own trap. As the double doors closed behind them, shutting out my ungrateful son and his accomplice, the heavy, suffocating weight that had pressed against my chest all evening finally lifted. I took a deep, steady breath, straightened the lapels of my blue velvet dress, and turned to face the remaining restaurant staff and the shaken manager, who stood trembling by the service station, offering profuse apologies for the disruption. “Dinner is over,” I announced calmly to the empty room. “And the real audit is just beginning.”
