THE SCALED ACCOUNT / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Final SentenceOne year after the morning Daniel poured the boiling coffee over my hand.

The criminal trial of Daniel Vance concluded at the State Supreme Courthouse in Manhattan.

Faced with undisputed video evidence, airtight forensic accounting ledgers, and testimonies from top corporate auditors, Daniel surrendered his defense and entered a formal guilty plea to all fourteen counts of corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, grand larceny, and felony domestic assault.

On a crisp Friday afternoon, the courtroom was packed to capacity for the final sentencing hearing.

I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Miriam Cross and Arthur Sterling.

Daniel sat at the defense table in a dark orange prison jumpsuit, his hands and ankles bound by heavy steel chains. He was thin, graying, his posture completely broken, looking thirty years older than his actual age.

Judge Katherine Vance adjusted her glasses on the bench, looking down at Daniel with cold, unyielding judgment.

“Daniel Vance,” Judge Vance spoke into her microphone, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “You demonstrated a profound level of arrogance, greed, and cruelty. You systematically robbed the woman who funded your lifestyle, treated her with contempt, and inflicted physical violence upon her when she attempted to protect her father’s legacy.”

Daniel kept his head bowed, tears dripping onto his jumpsuit.

“On counts one through ten regarding corporate fraud and wire embezzlement,” Judge Vance declared, striking her gavel, “you are sentenced to fifteen years in a state maximum-security penitentiary.”

She paused, looking sharply at him.

“On counts eleven through fourteen regarding felony domestic assault and witness intimidation, you are sentenced to an additional seven years, to be served consecutively.”

A collective gasp passed through the gallery. Twenty-two years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.

Lorraine, sitting in the back row, let out a loud, pathetic wail, burying her face in her hands.

As state marshals stepped forward to drag Daniel away, he stopped for a brief second beside my row, looking at me through his bloodshot, tear-filled eyes, his lips trembling violently.

“Clara...” Daniel whimpered, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. “Please... say something... tell me you forgive me...”

I looked at him with an icy, serene composure—the quiet strength he had failed to crush.

“I forgive you, Daniel,” I answered softly, my voice carrying clearly to everyone in the room. “Now go serve your sentence.”

The metal doors closed behind him with a final, heavy CLANG.
