Chapter 2 - The Mansion LockoutBy 5:30 p.m. that afternoon, the sun began setting over our suburban estate, casting long, dark shadows across the manicured front lawn.

Daniel’s sports car screeched onto the brick driveway, leaving black tire marks across the pavement. He slammed his car door, his face bright red with blind, uncontrollable rage, and stormed up the front steps of the mansion. Behind him, Lorraine hurried out of her luxury sedan, her designer heels clicking frantically against the stone steps, her face twisted in a mixture of anger and terror.
Daniel grabbed his brass front door key, jammed it into the lock, and tried to turn it.
The key wouldn't budge an inch.
He rattled the heavy oak door violently, pounding his fists against the wood. “What the hell is wrong with this lock?!”
Lorraine ran up behind him, clutching her leather handbag. “Daniel! Did you call the bank again?! My card was declined at the spa too! The manager treated me like a criminal in front of all my friends!”
“I called the bank five times!” Daniel roared, kicking the bottom of the door. “They said the primary account holder placed an emergency freeze on all corporate and subsidiary assets! They won't even talk to me!”
Suddenly, the lock clicked from the inside, and the heavy double doors swung open six inches.
Instead of me standing in the foyer, two towering, uniformed private security officers stepped into the doorway, accompanied by a locksmith carrying a heavy tool bag. Behind them stood my attorney, Miriam Cross, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and holding a stack of court documents.
Daniel froze, his mouth agape. “Who the hell are you people?! Get out of my house!”
Miriam stepped forward, her voice smooth, calm, and utterly unshakeable. “This is not your house, Mr. Vance. This property is registered under the sole ownership of the Clara Vale Revocable Trust.”
Lorraine shoved her way past Daniel, pointing her manicured finger at Miriam’s face. “You listen to me, you glorified secretary! My son is the CEO of Vale North Holdings! We pay for this estate! Where is that useless girl?! Tell her to get out here right now and fix this mess!”
Miriam pulled a certified court document from her folder and held it up in front of Lorraine’s face.
“Mrs. Vance,” Miriam stated flatly, “as of 4:00 p.m. today, the State Circuit Court issued an emergency temporary protective order against both you and your son, stemming from physical assault, financial exploitation, and domestic abuse. You are legally barred from entering this property.”
Daniel’s eyes went wide with panic. “Assault?! What the hell are you talking about?! She spilled coffee on herself because she’s clumsy!”
I stepped out from behind the security officers, wearing an elegant dark wool coat, my right hand neatly wrapped in a clean medical sling.
Daniel’s rage flared instantly. “Clara! Are you out of your mind?! Turn the company cards back on right now! I have a two-million-dollar deal closing tomorrow morning! If those funds don't clear, I’m ruined!”
I stood three feet away from him, separated by the security guards, looking at my husband with an expression of pure, unbothered calm.
“You aren't closing any deal, Daniel,” I said, my voice steady and clear. “Because as of three o'clock today, you are no longer an officer of Vale North Holdings.”
Lorraine let out a sharp, hysterical shriek. “You ungrateful little bitch! We gave you a family! We let you live in our world!”
“You didn't give me anything, Lorraine,” I answered softly, looking at her cold eyes. “You lived off my father’s legacy while calling me useless in my own kitchen.”
The locksmith clicked the new, heavy-duty deadbolts into place with a loud, echoey SNAP.
Miriam handed Daniel a sealed envelope. “This is a twenty-four-hour notice to arrange for a court-appointed escort to collect your personal clothing. If either of you set foot on this lawn before then, you will be arrested immediately for criminal trespassing.”
The two security officers stepped forward, forcing Daniel and Lorraine backward down the front steps.

“Clara! Clara, wait!” Daniel screamed, his voice cracking as the reality of his situation began to sink in. “Talk to me! We’re married! You can’t do this to your husband!”
I didn't answer. I simply stepped back into the grand foyer, took a deep, clean breath, and watched through the glass side-panels as the heavy double doors closed them out in the cold evening air.
