Chapter 3 - The Boardroom CoupAt 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the annual executive board meeting of Vale North Holdings convened on the forty-fifth floor of our downtown corporate headquarters.

Daniel arrived forty minutes early, wearing a rumpled suit, his hair unwashed, trying desperately to use his executive keycard to bypass the security turnstiles in the main lobby.
BEEP! BEEP! ACCESS DENIED.
The head of corporate security, a tall retired police captain named Marcus, stepped in front of the glass gates. “Mr. Vance, your security clearance has been revoked.”
“I’m the CEO of this company, Marcus!” Daniel yelled, drawing the attention of dozens of arriving employees. “Move out of my way before I fire you!”
“You don't have the authority to fire anyone, Daniel,” a voice called out from behind him.
Daniel turned around to see Miriam Cross and me walking across the polished marble floor. I wore a crisp navy suit, holding my head high, flanked by our chief forensic accountant, Arthur Sterling.
“Clara!” Daniel rushed toward me, but Marcus smoothly stepped between us, his massive frame blocking Daniel completely. “Clara, please! The board members are upstairs! We can handle this internally! Don't embarrass me in front of the shareholders!”
“The board is waiting for us, Daniel,” I said calmly. “You may join us as a non-voting spectator if you wish. But security will accompany you.”
We rode the private glass elevator up to the top floor in complete, tense silence. Daniel kept glaring at me, his fists clenching and unclenching at his sides, sweating through his shirt collar.
When the elevator doors opened, we walked into the grand boardroom. Eight senior board members—men and women who had been friends of my late father for decades—sat around the long mahogany table.
Daniel immediately tried to take his usual seat at the head of the table.
“Sit in the visitor’s chair against the wall, Daniel,” Arthur Sterling commanded sternly, setting a thick leather ledger onto the table.
Daniel blinked, stunned. “Arthur? What is the meaning of this?! I built this quarter’s growth strategy!”
“You didn't build anything, Mr. Vance,” Arthur corrected coldly.
I took my seat at the head of the table.
Arthur pressed a remote button, projecting a massive financial presentation onto the wall screen.
“Over the past thirty-six months,” Arthur announced to the board, “Mr. Daniel Vance has systematically embezzled $4.8 million from Vale North Holdings through falsified vendor invoices, fraudulent travel expenses, and unauthorized transfers into offshore accounts. Yesterday at 2:45 p.m., he attempted to wire two million dollars of company reserves into an unverified offshore entity in the Caymans.”
A wave of loud, angry gasps rippled across the boardroom table.
The senior board member, a respected billionaire named Harold Finch, slammed his fist onto the table. “Absolute corporate fraud! Criminal theft!”
Daniel stood up frantically from his chair, his hands shaking. “That’s a lie! That money was for a high-yield international investment! Clara knows nothing about business! She’s trying to frame me because of a personal marital dispute!”
Miriam Cross stood up, pulling a tablet from her briefcase.
“We also have digital video recordings,” Miriam revealed, “of Mr. Vance physically assaulting the primary shareholder—Miss Clara Vale—inside her residence yesterday morning, resulting in second-degree burns to her hand.”
The video played on the wall screen: Daniel pouring the boiling coffee over my hand while shouting, accompanied by Lorraine’s cruel laughter in the background.
The boardroom went completely, terrifyingly silent.
Harold Finch turned to the corporate legal team. “Execute the emergency removal clause immediately. Remove this man from our building.”
Daniel collapsed against the wall, his face pale as chalk, his eyes wide with absolute horror as two armed security officers stepped up to grab his arms.
“Clara... please...” Daniel whimpered, tears spilling down his cheeks. “Don't do this to me... I love you...”
May you like
I looked at him with cold, unshakeable composure.
“You didn't love me, Daniel,” I said softly. “You loved my father’s money. And now you’re going to pay every single dollar back.”
