THE RECORDING OF TRUTH / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Voice in the ShadowsWhen Owen returned to the third-floor apartment at noon, Harper was waiting by the kitchen window, her suitcase packed and sitting by the front door.

“I’m leaving, Owen,” she said, her voice shaking as she picked up her coat. “I heard from a friend in HR. Evan is framing you for server sabotage. If I stay, he’ll ruin your entire life.”

“Put the coat down, Harper,” Owen said quietly, placing his messenger bag on the table.

“You don’t understand—”

“I understand completely,” Owen interrupted, pulling a sleek silver audio device from his pocket and setting it beside the wobbly table leg. “I listened to him threaten you. I listened to him try to trade your freedom for a signed confession.”

Harper blinked in confusion. “What is that?”

“A high-definition directional microphone,” Owen said, a rare, cold smile spreading across his face. “I manage medical billing compliance software for a living, Harper. My entire job is tracking digital footprints, recording audit trails, and building unshakeable evidence logs for court cases.”

He pressed play on the small device.

Evan Blackwell’s voice echoed through the small kitchen, crystal clear:

“She’s going to prison, Parker. Unless she comes back to my office today, signs a full confession taking sole responsibility for the missing files, and agrees to return to my personal employ...”

Harper covered her mouth with both hands, tears springing to her eyes. “Owen... he confessed.”

“He did more than that,” Owen said, pulling a USB drive from his pocket. “While he was busy threatening me in the boardroom, I spent two hours pulling the secondary backup logs from our Denver server. Evan didn't wipe those files from our apartment. He wiped them from his private tablet in his executive office at four-fifteen yesterday.”
