Chapter 1 - The Unexpected HomecomingThe light rain tapped against the glass as Owen Parker stood in the hallway of his third-floor apartment, staring at the thick cream-colored envelope resting on the wobbly kitchen table.

Harper Bennett stood across from him, her hands folded tightly across her stomach. The warmth that usually filled her dark eyes was replaced by a pale, frozen panic.
“He knows, Owen,” she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the refrigerator. “He’s known since the acquisition went through.”
Owen walked over to the table and picked up the photograph. The black-and-white print showed the two of them on their small balcony three weeks ago—a moment of shared laughter over burnt coffee, captured through a telephoto lens from across the street. On the back, written in thick, confident marker, were six words: Tell Owen the truth before I do.
“What truth, Harper?” Owen asked quietly, setting the photo down. “What is Evan Blackwell holding over you?”
Harper took a slow, painful breath. “Before I left Evan eight months ago, I worked in the accounting department at Blackwell Health Holdings. I wasn't just a stage manager; I was trying to pay off my mother's medical debt. While transferring corporate records, I found a set of hidden accounts under Evan's personal shell company.”
Owen’s eyes narrowed. “Embezzlement?”
“Over twelve million dollars,” Harper said, her chin trembling. “He was siphoning funds from small software companies that Blackwell acquired—including the company you work for. When I tried to leave him, he told me that if I ever used those files against him, he’d pin the entire transfer on me. My credentials were used to sign off on the transactions.”

Owen stared at her, the pieces falling into place with terrifying speed. “That’s why he followed you here. Not just to control you, but to make sure you never talked.”
“And now that he saw us together,” Harper said softly, looking at Owen with deep sorrow, “he’s going to destroy your career to force me back into his life.”
