Chapter 5 - The Corporate AuditAt six o'clock the following morning, two black luxury SUVs pulled up to the front driveway of my family’s home.

I had already packed my few personal belongings—my books, my social work files, and my grandmother’s old pearl necklace—into two simple leather bags.

Travis stood by the open passenger door of the lead vehicle, holding an umbrella as gentle rain fell across the suburban street.

My father ran out onto the porch in his undershirt, his eyes red from lack of sleep.

“Emily! You can’t leave like this!” my father yelled through the rain. “The bank called this morning! They’re freezing our accounts! Tell your lawyers to stop!”

I turned back on the porch steps, looking at the house where I had suffered in silence for over two decades.

“The accounts aren't frozen by me, Mr. Hayes,” I replied calmly. “They are frozen by federal auditors tracing the twelve million dollars in guardianship funds you embezzled over twenty-six years.”

Arthur Vance, Travis’s senior legal partner, stepped out from the second SUV holding an official court injunction.

“Mr. Hayes,” Arthur declared firmly, “you have four hours to vacate this property. The house deed was purchased using funds siphoned from Emily’s trust, and it has been officially repossessed by the Sterling Estate.”

My father collapsed onto the porch steps, burying his face in his hands, sobbing in utter ruin as my mother’s shrieks of despair echoed from inside the living room.

I stepped into the luxury SUV, closed the door, and watched my past vanish in the rain-streaked window.
