Chapter 4 - The Unmasking at MidnightMadison turned her furious, hysterical glare onto my parents. âWHAT DID YOU DO?! WHY DID YOU THROW THE WRENCH?!â

âShut up, Madison!â my father roared, his face turning beet-red as panic took over.
âTonight,â Travis said, holding up a small, high-definition button camera pinned to his suit lapel, âthis entire dinner was recorded in 4K resolution. The physical intimidation, the throwing of heavy tools, the verbal degradationâevery second has been transmitted directly to the State Prosecutor's Office.â
My mother fell onto her knees beside the shattered wine glass, weeping hysterically. âTravis! Please! We raised her! We gave her a roof over her head!â
âYou gave her a cot near a drafty window,â I spoke up, my voice clear, steady, and stronger than it had ever been in my entire life.
They all looked at me.
For twenty-six years, I had believed I was small, unwanted, and burdening a family that tolerated me out of charity. Now, standing beside Travis, the truth shone bright and golden.
I was not a burden. I was the heir.
âEmily... sweetie...â my mother whimpered, reaching out her hands toward me with desperate, fake affection. âYou know we love you! We were just under stress tonight! Madison, tell her!â

Madison didn't move. She stood frozen in her designer dress, staring at me with a mixture of bitter envy and total, soul-crushing defeat. The man she thought she had brought home as a trophy was the man who had just dismantled her entire familyâs greed.
âDon't call me sweetie,â I said softly, stepping back from her reaching hands. âMy name is Emily Sterling.â
