Chapter 2 - The Man with the FolderThe dining room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

My fatherâs grip on my arm loosened slightly as he stared at Travis in complete confusion. âWhat do you mean, Travis? Youâre Madisonâs guest.â
Travis ignored my father entirely. He stood up, adjusted his suit jacket, and walked around the long mahogany table. He reached down, offering his warm, strong hand to help me up from the floor.
I took his hand, pulling myself up, brushing off my lace cardigan.
âTravis?â Madison gasped, her voice shrill with rising panic. âWhat is this? Is this some kind of joke?!â
Travis unzipped the leather folder, pulling out a thick, official legal document stamped with the seal of the Supreme Court of Connecticut.
âMy name is Travis Vance,â he announced, his voice clear, resonant, and carrying to every corner of the silent room. âI am not an investment banker. I am the lead executor and corporate trustee of the Vance & Sterling International Estate Trust.â
My mother blinked, her face going pale. âA... trustee?â
âThree weeks ago,â Travis explained, looking directly at my parents, âSir George Sterling passed away in London at eighty-eight. Under the terms of his non-revocable bloodline trust, ninety-five percent of his twelve-billion-dollar global estate was bequeathed to his only acknowledged granddaughter.â
Madison stood up, her face lighting up with greed. âGrandfather Sterling?! But... Mom, thatâs us! Weâre his heirs!â
âNot you, Madison,â Travis cut her off coldly. âAnd not your parents.â
