Chapter 13 - Julian’s Last Move

From prison, Julian sent Elena a letter.

She almost threw it away.

Instead, Naomi opened it first.

Julian claimed there was one account investigators had never found.

He offered the information if Elena agreed to visit.

Naomi advised against it.

Elena went anyway.

Behind thick glass, Julian looked older.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena said nothing.

“I mean it.”

“You’re sorry you lost.”

His eyes dropped.

“Maybe at first.”

He slid a number toward the glass.

An account identifier.

“There’s money there.”

“Why tell me?”

“Because some of it came from refinancing our house.”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“It belongs to you.”

“No,” she said. “It belongs to whoever you stole it from.”

Julian looked at her for a long moment.

“Is there someone else?”

Elena almost smiled.

“That stopped being your business the night you hit me.”

She stood.

“Elena.”

She stopped.

“I did love you.”

Elena turned.

“I believe you believed that.”

May you like

Then she left.

It was the last time she ever visited him.
