Divorce became final in November.
Elena moved into a smaller house with enormous windows and no memories attached to the walls.
She bought new furniture.
Changed her phone number.
Started therapy.
Returned to work.
Some days she felt powerful.
Other days, the sound of an angry male voice in a grocery store made her heart race.
Healing was not a straight line.
Daniel remained nearby without trying to become the center of it.
They had dinner occasionally.
Then more often.
One night Elena asked:
“Why haven’t you kissed me?”
Daniel nearly choked on his wine.
“I wasn’t sure you wanted me to.”
“I’m not sure either.”
“Then I won’t.”
She stared at him.
“That easy?”
“Yes.”
The answer affected her more deeply than any romantic declaration could have.
Months later, Elena kissed him first.
