Chapter 9 - A Son for a Mother

Gabriel wanted the ledgers.
Not copies.
The originals hidden by Anna.
Evelyn was held at an abandoned resort on Lake Michigan.
Adrian prepared to trade.
Sofia objected.
Mara objected more loudly.
Anna offered the documents.
Victor called federal agents.
Adrian did not argue this time.
Growth.
The operation began at dusk.
Gabriel stood inside a ballroom stripped of furniture.
Evelyn sat in a chair.
Unhurt.
Adrian entered carrying a case.
“You came.”
“She’s my mother.”
Gabriel laughed.
“She helped destroy mine.”
“She made choices.”
“So did Father.”
“Yes.”
“And you inherit forgiveness?”
“No.”
Adrian set the case down.
“I inherited consequences.”
Gabriel stared.
“Pretty words.”
“True ones.”
“You're closing operations.”
“Yes.”
“Giving records to investigators.”
“Yes.”
“Destroying our name.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Exposing what the name hid.”
Gabriel looked almost disappointed.
“I spent thirty years wanting you ruined.”
Adrian glanced toward Evelyn.
“And now?”
“You’re doing it yourself.”
“No.”
Adrian smiled faintly.
“I’m rebuilding.”
Gabriel raised a gun.
Adrian remained still.
“What would killing me give you?”
“Justice.”
“No.”
Adrian’s voice stayed calm.
“Attention.”
Gabriel’s face tightened.
“You were abandoned. Hidden. Denied. That was wrong.”
Evelyn stared at Adrian.
“But Leo didn't do it.”
“Sofia didn't do it.”
“Mara didn't.”
“Anna didn't.”
“And I was a child when Father chose you over me.”
Gabriel’s hand trembled.
“That doesn't make me innocent.”
Adrian continued.
“But it means you’re aiming at the wrong generation.”
Federal agents moved.
Gabriel saw a reflection.
Panic.
He grabbed Evelyn.
She elbowed him unexpectedly.
The gun fell.
Adrian lunged.
Victor entered.
Agents swarmed.
Gabriel was arrested.
Nobody died.
Adrian considered that progress too.
Outside, Evelyn hugged him.
“I don’t deserve you.”
Adrian replied:
“This family needs to stop discussing love as something people deserve.”
She looked surprised.
He continued.
“You face consequences. We work from there.”
Evelyn cried.
Mara, standing nearby, smiled faintly.
Later Gabriel accepted a plea agreement exposing old networks.
Dozens of illegal operations ended.
Victims received restitution.
The Moretti empire shrank.
Legitimate businesses survived.
Adrian lost money.
A lot.
He discovered he slept better.
Leo stopped screaming at night after the nursery environment was changed and his care stabilized under medical guidance.

The symbolism was almost too obvious.
Adrian’s house became quieter when the secrets did.
