Chapter 4 - The Mother in the Photograph

The answer was hidden inside Sofia’s dressing room.
Mara found it.
Adrian had sealed the room after the funeral.
He had entered only once.
Everything remained exactly where Sofia left it.
Perfume.
Jewelry.
A novel face-down beside the bed.
A scarf across a chair.
Mara walked to the closet.
“Did she keep photographs?”
“Hundreds.”
“Family?”
“She said she had none.”
Mara flinched.
Adrian noticed.
“She was protecting you.”
“Yes.”
Mara opened a jewelry drawer.
False bottom.
Inside were twenty photographs.
Sofia.
Mara.
Their father.
Then another woman.
Young.
Dark-haired.
Pregnant.
Adrian did not recognize her.
Mara did.
“Anna.”
“Who?”
“Our cousin.”
“Where is she?”
“Dead.”
Adrian almost laughed from exhaustion.
“Of course.”
Mara looked offended.
“Sorry.”
“What happened?”
“Car accident. Seven months ago.”
Pregnant woman.
Seven months ago.
Leo was six months old.
Adrian’s pulse changed.
“Was she pregnant when she died?”
“Yes.”
“How far?”
Mara stared.
“Eight months.”
Silence.
Adrian picked up the photograph.
The woman’s eyes looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Leo had those eyes.
“Mara.”
“I see it.”
“Could Anna be Leo’s mother?”
“I don't know.”
They found Anna Ellis’s accident records.
Car recovered.
Driver presumed dead after fire.
No fetal remains specifically identified.
Closed case.
Adrian now distrusted every official death in the state of Illinois.
Victor investigated.
Anna had been employed at Moretti Foundation accounting.
Again, everything intersected his family.
She had resigned one week before the accident.
Reason:
Relocation.
Destination unknown.
Then Adrian found a note behind the photograph.
Sofia’s handwriting.
Anna knows what Vincent did. If anything happens to me, find her before Mother does.
Adrian’s blood went cold.
Mother.
Evelyn.
He confronted her in the library.
She read the note.
Sat down.
“I can explain.”
“I am finished hearing that sentence.”
“Adrian.”
“Who is Anna Ellis?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Mara’s cousin.”
“And?”
“Your half-sister.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
“Vincent had an affair with Mara and Sofia’s aunt.”
Mara looked equally shocked.
Evelyn continued.
“Anna was his daughter.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“My father destroyed their family and fathered another child inside it.”
“Yes.”
“Did Sofia know?”
“She discovered it.”
“When?”
“Last year.”
“And Leo?”
Evelyn looked toward the nursery upstairs.
“I don’t know.”
“Wrong.”
“I truly don’t.”
“Why did Sofia write ‘find her before Mother does’?”
Evelyn began crying.
“Because I wanted Anna out of Chicago.”
“Why?”
“She found old financial ledgers.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Always money.”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Names.”
“What names?”
“Children.”
Mara frowned.
“What children?”
Evelyn looked sick.
“Vincent funded illegal adoption arrangements decades ago.”
Adrian stopped.
Not kidnapping.
Not trafficking in lurid terms.
But forged guardianship and coercive placements used to reward allies and silence families.
“My father did that?”
“Yes.”
“And Anna found proof?”
“Yes.”
“So you wanted her gone.”
“I wanted her safe.”
Adrian stared.
“Did you arrange her accident?”
“No!”
The denial felt genuine.
“I bought her a ticket to Portugal. She never made the flight.”
Mara whispered:
“Sofia thought you did it.”
“I know.”
“Did Sofia confront you?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The day before she disappeared.”
Adrian’s hands shook.
“What did she say?”
“That she found Anna alive.”
Silence.
“Where?”
“She wouldn’t tell me.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“My wife knew Anna survived.”
“Yes.”
“And Anna may be Leo’s biological mother.”
“I don’t know.”
Then a security guard entered.
“Mr. Moretti.”
“What?”
“There’s a woman at the gate.”
“Who?”
“She says her name is Anna Ellis.”
No one moved.
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
Then Mara.
“Alive.”
Apparently.
Again.
Anna entered ten minutes later.
Thin.
Dark hair cut short.
Scar along one cheek.
She looked at Adrian.
Then Leo, who Mara carried downstairs.
Anna’s face collapsed.
“My baby.”
Adrian felt the floor move beneath him.
Mara handed Leo to her cautiously.
Anna held him.
Leo stared.
Then smiled.
A real smile.
Adrian had rarely seen it.
His chest broke.
Anna whispered:
“Hi, Nicholas.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“His name is Leo.”
Anna looked at him.
“No.”
She kissed the baby’s forehead.
“His name was Nicholas when I gave birth to him.”
The room became ice.
Adrian’s voice came low.
“Tell me everything.”
May you like
Anna looked toward Evelyn.
“I was supposed to die before I ever got the chance.”
