Chapter 7 - Evelyn’s Choice

Evelyn did not deny meeting Gabriel.

She admitted everything.

Not immediately.

Adrian placed Sofia’s drawing on the table.

His mother stared at her own name.

Then stopped pretending.

“He contacted me two years ago.”

“Why?”

“He wanted recognition.”

“You gave it?”

“No.”

“What did you give him?”

“Money.”

“How much?”

“Enough to leave us alone.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Blackmail.”

“Yes.”

“What did he have?”

“Proof about your father.”

“The adoptions?”

“Yes.”

“And your role?”

She closed her eyes.

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“What role?”

“I helped clean records.”

Mara stared.

“You helped Vincent steal children?”

“No!”

Evelyn’s voice cracked.

“I helped move children out of dangerous homes. At least that is what he told me.”

“And when you learned otherwise?”

“Too late.”

“How many?”

“I don't know.”

Mara looked sick.

Adrian whispered:

“Gabriel found out.”

“Yes.”

“He threatened exposure.”

“Yes.”

“And Sofia?”

“She discovered my payments.”

“So she thought you were working with him.”

“Yes.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

“Did you help him access the estate?”

Silence.

“Mother.”

“Once.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“He said he wanted to see you.”

“When?”

“Four months ago.”

“The night Sofia vanished?”

Evelyn nodded.

Mara swore under her breath.

Adrian stepped away because if he remained close, he might say something irreparable.

“You opened my house to him.”

“I didn’t know—”

“Stop.”

His voice broke.

“Everyone keeps telling me what they didn’t know after making choices they hid from me.”

Evelyn cried.

“I’m sorry.”

“Where did they take Sofia?”

“I truly don't know.”

Adrian believed her.

That almost hurt more.

His mother had not intended Sofia’s disappearance.

She had simply opened the door.

Consequences entered.

Later, Evelyn packed.

Adrian did not stop her.

“Where will you go?”

“My apartment.”

“Security stays.”

She almost smiled.

“Still my son.”

“Yes.”

“Even after this?”

He looked at her.

“I haven’t decided what forgiveness looks like.”

She nodded.

“Fair.”

Before leaving, Evelyn approached Mara.

“I was wrong about you.”

Mara stared.

“Many times.”

“Yes.”

“Prison?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“I’ve regretted it every day.”

“Regret is private.”

Mara’s voice stayed calm.

“What you do afterward matters.”

Evelyn nodded.

Then left.

That evening Victor returned.

Adrian met him in the study.

“I was wrong.”

Victor raised an eyebrow.

“Can you repeat that? I’d like to record it.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“I was wrong.”

“Remarkable.”

“Don’t ruin it.”

Victor became serious.

“Why did Sofia trust me?”

“Because you protected Mara.”

Adrian nodded.

“And because Victor discovered Gabriel’s shell companies before Sofia vanished.”

Victor had been investigating secretly.

He showed records.

Gabriel’s money moved through a private medical network.

One location remained active.

A former convent in Indiana.

Adrian stared.

“Is she there?”

“Maybe.”

They moved before dawn.

This time with federal agents.

Adrian had finally stopped trying to solve family crimes entirely inside the family.

The convent sat beside frozen farmland.

Three armed guards surrendered.

One ran.

Inside, they found six rooms.

Five empty.

The sixth locked.

Adrian opened it.

Sofia stood near the window.

Thin.

Pale.

Alive.

She turned.

For a second, neither moved.

Then she whispered:

“Adrian.”

He crossed the room.

She ran toward him.

They collided.

Sofia cried against his chest.

Adrian held her so tightly she gasped.

He loosened his arms immediately.

“Sorry.”

She laughed through tears.

“You still do that.”

“What?”

“Try to control everything.”

He touched her face.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me bury you.”

Her expression broke.

“I didn’t know they had.”

“What?”

“Gabriel staged the death after taking me.”

“So the body—”

“Not mine.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Another family lie.

Sofia touched his cheek.

“Leo?”

“Safe.”

“Mara?”

“With him.”

Sofia smiled.

“She came.”

“Yes.”

“I knew she would.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You sent her.”

Sofia nodded.

“Through the agency.”

“You arranged her hiring?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't know who else I could trust.”

Adrian’s relief became anger again.

“We have a lot to discuss.”

“I know.”

“Anna.”

“I know.”

“The false pregnancy.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me every day for months.”

Tears filled Sofia’s eyes.

“I know.”

Adrian stepped back.

He still loved her.

That was the problem.

Love survived truths that trust did not.

“We’ll get you home.”

She whispered:

“Home might not mean what it used to.”

He nodded.

May you like

“No.”

For once, he did not lie.
