Chapter 11 - Sofia Chose HerselfSofia and Adrian finalized their divorce quietly.

No war.

No public humiliation.

At the courthouse, Sofia handed him the ring.

“Keep it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I spent years wearing it like proof that I belonged somewhere safe.”

She smiled.

“I need to learn I can be safe without belonging to anyone.”

Adrian nodded.

He returned the ring.

“Then you keep it.”

She looked surprised.

“As proof you survived.”

Sofia hugged him.

He held her.

They both cried.

Then released each other.

Sofia moved to Boston.

She began working with organizations helping people escape coercive family systems.

She called weekly.

Leo recognized her voice on video calls.

Mara’s relationship with her sister slowly repaired.

Not perfectly.

Sisters fought.

Real sisters especially.

One evening Sofia asked Mara:

“Have you kissed him yet?”

Mara almost dropped the phone.

“No.”

“Liar.”

“He’s your ex-husband.”

“Yes.”

“That is not normal.”

“Nothing about us is normal.”

Mara groaned.

Sofia smiled.

“For the record, I’m okay.”

“I’m not asking permission.”

“Good.”

“But thank you.”

Mara hung up.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

“Heard everything?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Say one thing and I resign.”

“From nannying?”

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then I’ll say nothing.”

They stared.

He leaned in.

Stopped.

“May I?”

Mara smiled.

“Look at that.”

“What?”

“Consent.”

“Remarkable growth.”

She kissed him.

Leo chose that moment to begin crying.

They separated.

Mara laughed.

“Romantic.”

Adrian sighed.

“My son has terrible timing.”

“Not your son.”

Adrian frowned.

Mara touched his face.

May you like

“Your son too.”

That mattered.
