Chapter 9 - The Press Conference at the RidgeTwo months later.

The morning sun broke over the snow-dusted peaks of the Columbus Ridge State Park.
At the trail entrance, a permanent granite monument stood newly erected, surrounded by press cameras, state rangers, and local community members.
The fallout from Maya’s photos had been swift and catastrophic for Caldwell Outdoor Resorts. Federal prosecutors had launched a massive fraud investigation into Julian Caldwell and his associates. The land grant was revoked, the forestry official was indicted, and the entire twelve hundred acres of pristine old-growth forest were officially transferred to the State Parks System as a permanently protected wilderness preserve.
Maya Bennett stood near the monument, wearing a sleek, professional winter coat, her camera resting comfortably on her hip.
She was no longer a struggling freelancer.
Her photos of the ridge had won the prestigious National Geographic Environmental Photo of the Year award. Her work was featured on the cover of three major international magazines, and she had been named the lead visual director for the State Conservation Board, complete with a six-figure salary and full creative independence.
A reporter approached her with a microphone. “Ms. Bennett, looking back at that night when your tent collapsed in the storm, did you ever imagine it would lead to all of this?”
May you like
Maya looked across the crowd toward the edge of the trail, where Daniel Reyes stood wearing his ranger lead uniform, watching her with a quiet, radiant pride.
Maya smiled, her dark eyes shining with happiness. “That storm destroyed a cheap tent... but it helped me find everything that actually mattered.”
