Chapter 1 - The Collapse on the RidgeThe silence following Julian Caldwell’s demand for the memory card hung thick over the damp mountain campsite.

Julian’s hand remained extended, his polished nails and expensive gold watch glittering beneath the overcast morning sky. Behind him, his marketing director, Elise, stood holding her phone, her eyes fixed on Maya’s camera bag.
Maya shifted her weight, instinctively tightening her grip on the padded shoulder strap. She looked up at Julian, her face pale, rain-dampened hair clinging to her cheek, but her dark eyes were completely steady.
“The memory card stays with me, Mr. Caldwell,” Maya said, her voice clear and unhurried. “My contract specifies that I deliver edited high-resolution images within forty-eight hours after the event. Raw files are my intellectual property until final payment is rendered.”
Julian’s smile didn’t flicker, but his eyes narrowed to cold, razor-thin slits. “Ms. Bennett, you are currently standing on property leased by Caldwell Outdoor Resorts, wearing a guide’s oversized jacket, having just survived a disastrous collapse of your own cheap equipment. I am offering you an opportunity to hand over the footage gracefully so my team can manage the publicity.”
“My equipment didn’t fail because it was cheap,” Maya replied, stepping toward him. “The main aluminum guy-lines were cut cleanly through.”
A subtle murmur rippled through the gathering crowd of donors and apartment building neighbors.
Daniel Reyes stepped out of his tent, his broad shoulders blocking Julian’s view of Maya. “She’s right, Caldwell. I inspected her tent poles ten minutes ago. The tension lines weren't snapped by wind pressure. Someone used a serrated multi-tool blade on the paracord last night.”
Julian let out a dry, condescending laugh. “Are you suggesting someone sabotaged a photographer's tent in the middle of a thunderstorm? That’s absurd. Why would anyone do that?”
“Maybe because of what she was shooting before the storm hit,” Daniel said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a quiet, dangerous authority.
Elise Vale cleared her throat nervously, stepping up beside Julian. “Julian, the donors are gathering at the main pavilion for the morning keynote speech. We should head down.”

Julian stared at Daniel for two agonizing seconds before turning his gaze back to Maya. “Keep your memory card for now, Ms. Bennett. But remember—contracts can be terminated, invoices can be disputed, and reputations in this industry are extremely fragile.”
He turned on his heel, walking down the muddy trail toward the heated luxury pavilion, his entourage trailing behind him like well-dressed shadows.
