Chapter 4 - What the Lens SawBy 11:30 a.m., the clouds began to part over the ridge, revealing patches of pale autumn sunlight.

Down at the main pavilion, a lavish lunch buffet had been set up for the retreat guests. Silver platters of roasted meats, artisanal breads, and vintage wines lined the wooden tables beneath heated lamps. Julian Caldwell stood near the podium, surrounded by wealthy donors and local news reporters who had hiked up the access trail for the afternoon press announcement.
Daniel and Maya walked down the trail toward the pavilion, keeping the camera bag safely concealed beneath Daniel’s heavy waterproof pack.
Elise Vale spotted them immediately and glided over, her smile sharp and insincere.
“Ms. Bennett,” Elise said smoothly, stepping into their path. “Julian requested that you begin taking candid shots of the donors enjoying the luncheon. He wants the images uploaded to our press portal within the hour.”
“I’ll need my full day rate paid up front before I upload anything to your portal,” Maya said neutrally.
Elise’s smile stiffened. “We discussed this. Payment is processed net-thirty days after the event.”
“Contracts change when conditions change,” Daniel interjected, stepping beside Maya. “Your employer accused her of using cheap gear when her safety lines were deliberately sabotaged. We want the wire transfer confirmed before she connects her camera to any server.”
Elise glared at Daniel. “You’re a mountain guide, Mr. Reyes. I suggest you stick to checking trail maps and leave corporate management to professionals.”
“I know these mountains better than your boss does, Ms. Vale,” Daniel replied calmly. “And I know when someone is hiding a mess under a tarp.”
Before Elise could reply, Julian Caldwell approached the group, holding a glass of sparkling water. He looked impeccably composed, his tailor-made outdoor vest crisp and unwrinkled.
“Is there a problem here, Elise?” Julian asked smoothly.

“Ms. Bennett is refusing to release her morning photos without immediate payment,” Elise reported.
Julian took a slow sip of his water, his eyes locking onto Maya with quiet, menacing intent. “Ms. Bennett, let’s step into my private office trailer for a moment. I’m sure we can come to an amicable... understanding.”
