Chapter 8 - The Memorial on the Hill

On a serene Sunday morning in November, Marcus took Lily and Emma to the tranquil, sun-drenched gardens of Rosehill Cemetery on the North Side of Chicago.
In the center of a private, gated knoll surrounded by ancient weeping willows and blooming white hydrangeas stood a grand marble monument dedicated to Grace Vance Blackwell.
Through the federal investigation, Marcus had recovered Grace’s true remains from the private cemetery in Oregon, re-interring her with the dignity, honor, and love she deserved beside her family.
Marcus knelt before the marble headstone, holding Lily’s hand in his left and Emma’s hand in his right.
Both girls were dressed in their yellow coats, holding large bouquets of yellow sunflowers and white roses—Grace’s favorite flowers.
"We brought Mommy flowers," Lily whispered softly, placing her bouquet at the base of the monument.
Emma stepped forward, gently laying her bouquet beside her sister’s. She looked at the carved portrait of Grace on the marble, seeing her own emerald eyes reflected in her mother’s smile.
"Mommy told me before she went to sleep that a hero would find me," Emma whispered, her voice clear and sweet. "She said you had hands big enough to protect the whole world."
Marcus pulled both girls against his sides, pressing his forehead against the cool marble stone.

"I have them both now, Grace," Marcus whispered into the autumn breeze. "They are safe. They are loved. And our family is whole."
A gentle gust of wind rustled through the willow branches, carrying a warm shower of golden leaves across the grass, as if a loving hand were resting over them in eternal blessing.
