Chapter 6 - The Morning in the Sun

The next morning, the bright autumn sun poured through the panoramic glass windows of the penthouse living room, bathing the room in warm, golden light.
Emma woke up slowly beneath the thick, plush goose-down duvet in the spacious guest suite. For a moment, her eyes darted in panic around the high ceilings, the crystal chandeliers, and the plush white carpets.
Then she looked to her right.
Lily was sleeping peacefully beside her, wearing matching yellow silk pajamas, her arm thrown affectionately over Emma’s shoulder.
Sitting in a soft armchair by the foot of the bed was Marcus.
He was dressed in a comfortable cream cashmere sweater and dark trousers, holding a tray with two steaming mugs of hot chocolate topped with miniature marshmallows and fresh blueberry pancakes.
When Marcus saw Emma’s emerald eyes flutter open, a gentle, warm smile broke across his face.
"Good morning, Emma," Marcus said softly.
Emma pulled the blanket up to her chin, her small fingers finding her worn teddy bear. "Am I... am I in trouble?"
Marcus set the tray on the bedside table and walked over to the edge of the bed. He sat down, his large, warm hand gently brushing a stray brown curl from her forehead.
"You will never be in trouble in this house, Emma," Marcus whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "And you will never have to be cold, hungry, or afraid ever again."
Lily stirred, yawning and stretching her arms with a cheerful giggle. "Morning, Daddy! Look, Emma woke up!"
Emma sat up slowly, looking at the warm pancakes, then looking up into Marcus’s eyes.
"Are you really my daddy?" Emma asked, her tiny voice trembling with a fragile hope that broke Marcus’s heart.
Tears welled in Marcus’s eyes. He reached out, scooping both Emma and Lily into his strong, protective embrace, pulling them against his chest.

"I am your daddy, Emma," Marcus wept softly, kissing the top of her head. "I searched for you for six years. And I am never letting you go."
Emma buried her face into Marcus’s sweater, her small arms wrapping around his neck, letting out a deep, shuddering sob as six years of loneliness and fear dissolved into the warm morning light.
