Chapter 9 - Embracing the Darkness

The gunfire stopped after what felt like an eternity.

The heavy steel door of the panic room hissed open.

Clara scrambled to her feet, expecting the worst.

Julian stood in the doorway, covered in soot and blood, but very much alive.

Clara didn't think; she just ran, launching herself into his arms.

He caught her, burying his face in her neck as he held her impossibly tight.

“It’s over,” he rasped, his voice exhausted.

“Volkov is dead. His empire is dismantled.”

Clara pulled back, wiping a smear of blood from Julian’s cheekbone.

“Are you hurt?” she sobbed.

“Just a grazing shot,” he lied, though he favored his left side.

Later that night, as the police cleared out and his men secured the building, Julian sat on the edge of the bed.

“I am a dangerous man, Clara,” he said, looking at the floor.

“My world is dark, and it will only taint your light.”

He looked up, his eyes filled with absolute agony.

“I am breaking my own heart, but tomorrow, I am sending you away with enough money to start over anywhere in the world.”

Clara walked over, straddling his lap and forcing him to look at her.

“I didn't run from Marcus, and I am certainly not running from you.”

She kissed him, pouring all her love into the touch.

“Your darkness doesn't scare me, Julian. It protects me.”
