Chapter 6 - The Syndicate's Wrath

The standoff in the community center lobby lasted exactly ten seconds.
The screech of tires outside signaled the arrival of Julian’s reinforcements.
Julian himself walked through the front doors, the absolute picture of terrifying authority.
He did not carry a weapon, yet the three armed thugs instantly lowered theirs, their faces pale with terror.
“Mr. Vance,” the leader stammered, lowering his gun completely.
“We didn't know this was your territory.”
Julian’s voice was as cold as a Boston winter.
“It wasn't. But as of today, this building is under my personal protection.”
He stepped closer to the trembling men.
“Tell Volkov that if one of his rats so much as breathes near this street again, I will burn his entire operation to ashes.”
The thugs nodded frantically and scrambled out the door.
Julian turned immediately to Clara, scanning her from head to toe.
“Are you hurt?” he demanded, closing the distance between them.
“No, I’m fine,” she breathed, shaking with adrenaline.
He pulled her into his chest, wrapping his arms around her tightly in front of the entire stunned room.
“I told you it was too dangerous,” he murmured into her hair.
Clara hugged him back, feeling an undeniable sense of safety in the arms of a criminal.
