Chapter 1 - The Cost of Protection

Clara pushed the thick hospital blankets aside, her bare feet hitting the cold linoleum floor.
She swayed slightly, her vision swimming with black dots, but she gripped the edge of the bed to steady herself.
“You are making a mistake, Ms. Hayes,” Nurse Jenkins warned, stepping forward with a clipboard pressed to her chest.
“My kids at the center don’t have anyone else today,” Clara replied, her voice trembling but resolute.
She reached for her faded gray trench coat, ignoring the way her bruised wrist ached at the movement.
Before her fingers could brush the fabric, the heavy wooden door of her VIP suite swung open.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees as a tall man stepped over the threshold.
It was the stranger from the sidewalk, though in the harsh daylight, he looked even more intimidating.
He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that screamed old money, and his dark eyes swept over her fragile frame with calculating intensity.
“You are not going anywhere,” Julian Vance stated, his voice a low rumble that left absolutely no room for debate.
Clara froze, her breath catching as she recognized the deep timbre that had anchored her during her collapse.
“I appreciate your help last night, Mr…?”
“Vance. Julian Vance,” he provided, stepping closer until he towered over her.
“Thank you, Mr. Vance, but I have a job to do, and I cannot afford this room,” she said, gesturing to the lavish surroundings.
“The bill has already been settled in full,” Julian replied smoothly, slipping his hands into his pockets.
Clara’s eyes widened in shock.
“You can’t do that. I don’t accept charity.”
Julian’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking beneath his smooth skin.
“It is not charity; it is an investment in my own peace of mind.”
He stepped within inches of her, his gaze dropping to the bruises she desperately tried to hide behind her back.
“Because if you walk out of here and collapse on the subway, my driver will simply have to scrape you off the pavement again.”
Clara swallowed hard, overwhelmed by his sheer presence.
“Who are you?” she whispered.
May you like
“Someone who is going to drive you home,” Julian answered, offering his arm.
“And I do not take no for an answer.”
