Chapter 5 – The Witness Who Never Came

Chapter 5 – The Witness Who Never Came
The investigation changed overnight.
Marta Morales was no longer the only suspect.
Someone else had been pulling the strings.
Detective Collins quietly assembled a new task force. The fewer people who knew, the safer the investigation would be.
Then the phone rang.
"We found someone."
The caller was a retired janitor from Riverside Executive Hotel.
"I remember the man in Room 914."
Within an hour, Collins and Vega were driving to meet him.
The old man looked terrified.
"I stayed quiet because I have grandchildren," he whispered. "But Thomas wasn't meeting a woman that night. He met a businessman first... then another man arrived. They argued."
"What about Marta?"
"She came later."
Collins leaned forward.
"What were they arguing about?"
The janitor swallowed.
"I heard Thomas yell..."
'I'm not helping you steal another child!'
Silence.
Vega's blood ran cold.
Another child?
Before the janitor could continue...
A truck smashed through the café window.
Glass exploded everywhere.
Collins threw Vega to the floor.
When the dust settled...
The janitor was dead.
The truck driver had vanished.
May you like
It wasn't an accident.
Someone had silenced the last witness.
