Chapter 4 – The Second Suspect

The photograph changed everything.

The unknown man wasn't family.

He wasn't a friend.

Facial recognition found no match.

It was as if he had never existed.

While investigators searched for answers, Marta remained strangely calm.

Detective Collins placed the recovered hotel image in front of her.

"You were in Room 914."

She smiled.

"No."

"We recovered surveillance footage."

"Then show me my face."

Collins couldn't.

The woman's face was hidden.

Only the bracelet connected her to the scene.

Marta leaned back confidently.

"A bracelet isn't proof."

She was right.

Legally...

it wasn't.

Across town, forensic analysts finally restored data from Thomas's cellphone.

Most messages had been deleted.

Except one.

An unsent draft.

If anything happens to me... don't trust—

The message ended there.

No name.

No explanation.

Just three unfinished words.

Attorney Vega couldn't stop thinking about Lucia's drawing.

She drove back to protective custody.

"Lucia..."

The child looked up.

"The man with the black car..."

"What did he look like?"

Lucia closed her eyes.

"He wore gloves."

"What else?"

"He argued with Daddy outside."

"What did they argue about?"

Lucia whispered the words exactly as she remembered.

"You promised you'd keep her hidden."

Vega's heart skipped.

"Are you sure?"

Lucia nodded.

"Daddy shouted..."

'I'm done protecting all of you.'

That night, Detective Collins requested Thomas's financial records.

Within minutes, another mystery appeared.

For almost a year before his death...

Thomas had received monthly payments from an unknown company.

Thirty thousand dollars.

Every month.

No invoices.

No employment records.

No explanation.

The company no longer existed.

It had dissolved one week after Thomas was murdered.

Then came the biggest surprise yet.

The company's registered owner...

wasn't Marta.

It wasn't Ana.

It wasn't Thomas.

It belonged to none other than...

Judge Harold Benson.

The same judge who had presided over Ana's trial.

The same judge who had rejected every appeal.

The same judge who had signed her death warrant.

Collins stared at the screen in disbelief.

If the records were real...

this had never been a murder investigation.

May you like

It had been a cover-up.

And someone inside the justice system had been protecting it from the very beginning.
