Chapter 6 - The Paper TrailAt the hospital, Dr. Aris—the chief trauma surgeon—walked out of Emily’s room at four in the morning.

“She’s going to be okay, Martin,” Dr. Aris told me, resting a hand on my shoulder. “She has a minor skull fracture, three broken ribs, and severe bruising, but there is no permanent neurological damage. We’ve secured all forensic evidence for the criminal prosecution.”

I walked into the quiet room.

Emily was propped up on pillows, her face bandaged, an IV line hooked to her arm. When she saw me, tears welled up in her good eye.

“Dad... I’m so sorry,” she whispered, her voice tight with pain. “I should have told you months ago. He... he threatened to ruin your business if I left him.”

I sat beside her bed, holding her small hand in both of mine.

“He couldn't ruin my business if he tried for a hundred years, sweetie,” I told her softly. “He was living on my charity the entire time.”

“What’s going to happen now?” she asked.

I pulled out my tablet, showing her the digital file my legal team had compiled overnight.

“Brandon didn't just assault you, Emily,” I revealed. “When my forensic team audited the lease records for the mansion, we found he had forged your signature on a two-hundred-thousand-dollar personal loan using your trust fund as collateral.”

Emily gasped. “He said it was an investment in his firm!”

“It wasn't an investment,” I said. “He was paying off offshore gambling debts. It’s grand larceny, identity theft, and federal bank fraud.”

A soft knock came at the door. Victoria Vance, my attorney, stepped inside carrying a signed court order.

“The judge just signed the Emergency Order of Protection, Martin,” Victoria announced. “Brandon Vale is held without bond. And his mother has been officially served with a restraining order.”
