Chapter 3 - The Lock on the ShedJudith rushed out onto the lawn wearing a clear rain cape, her wine glass long forgotten.

âBrandon, what did you do?!â she hissed, her voice cracking with panic as she saw Emily cradled in my arms. âYou said she was locked in the guest room!â
âShe wouldnât stop screaming!â Brandon stammered, taking a step back into the wet grass. âShe threatened to tell her father everything! I had to put her somewhere she couldn't make noise!â
âYou idiot!â Judith screamed at him. âIf the neighbors see thisââ
âThe neighbors are the least of your concerns, Mrs. Vale,â a loud, authoritative voice boomed from the side gate.
Four uniformed police officers rounded the corner of the house, flashlights cutting through the dark rain. Leading them was Captain Miller, a veteran officer who had worked security for my commercial centers fifteen years ago.
Behind the police came an ambulance, its red and blue lights flashing against the white marble facade of the mansion.
âOfficer, thank God!â Judith immediately shifted gears, adjusting her coat and stepping forward with an anxious, innocent expression. âMy son and daughter-in-law had a small domestic argument. Her father broke onto our property and assaulted my son!â
Captain Miller ignored her completely. He walked straight past Judith, kneeling beside me as the paramedics rushed over with a gurney.
âMartin,â Captain Miller said quietly, recognizing my face instantly. âIs she breathing?â
âConcussion, severe facial trauma, multiple contusions,â I reported, my voice hard as granite. âThey locked her in an unheated storage shed after destroying her phone.â
The paramedics carefully lifted Emily onto the stretcher, hooking up an oxygen mask and warm IV fluids. As they wheeled her toward the ambulance, Emily reached out, her fingers catching my sleeve.
âDad... don't leave...â
âIâm right behind you, baby,â I promised, kissing her forehead. âNobody touches you ever again.â
Captain Miller stood up, turning his cold gaze onto Brandon and Judith.

âCaptain,â Brandon said, trying to summon his usual wealthy confidence. âMy family owns this estate. This man is trespassing on private propertyââ
âMr. Vale,â Captain Miller interrupted, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. âYou are under arrest for felony domestic battery, false imprisonment, and aggravated assault.â
