Chapter 9 - The Vance-Carter Foundation

One year after that rainy Sunday, our family hosted a grand celebration on the stone terrace of the Carter estate.
Over two hundred business leaders, philanthropic donors, and medical researchers gathered under the open autumn sky to inaugurate the Lily Vance Foundation for Child Welfare and Genetic Ethics—a fifty-million-dollar endowment dedicated to providing legal protection, medical aid, and emergency housing for abandoned and orphaned children across the Eastern Seaboard.
Standing beside me on the podium was Helen, looking radiant and healthy in a tailored navy dress, and eight-year-old Lily, dressed in a beautiful daffodil-yellow lace dress with matching ribbons in her hair.
"One year ago," I spoke into the microphone, looking out over the crowd, "a brave young girl taught me that family is not defined solely by blood, but by the courage to protect the innocent when the rest of the world turns away. Today, we ensure that no child in this state is ever left in the dark."
The crowd erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
Lily looked up at me, her brown eyes shining with immense, unburdened pride as she held baby Leo’s hand, who was sitting happily in Mrs. Harris’s arms in the front row.
After the speeches, while guests enjoyed the orchestra on the lawn, Detective Sarah Morgan walked up to the terrace, holding a glass of sparkling cider.

"You built an empire out of a miracle, Nathan," Morgan smiled warmly.
"The miracle was that a little girl knocked on my door, Sarah," I replied, looking out over my children with deep, unshakeable peace.
