Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Manor

At 11:30 AM, three sleek black town cars screeched up the gravel driveway of my Greenwich estate.

The heavy mahogany front doors were unlocked.

Victoria Sterling stormed into the grand foyer wearing a bespoke emerald-green wool overcoat, towering stilettos, and oversized dark sunglasses, flanked by two private security guards and a nervous junior county bailiff. At thirty-two, Victoria had her sister Clara's sharp cheekbones, but none of her warmth; her eyes were filled with ruthless, calculating greed.

"Where is my nephew?!" Victoria demanded, her voice echoing shrilly off the marble walls. "Bailiff, serve the custody writ immediately! This man has unlawfully detained an infant belonging to the Sterling estate!"

"The only thing belonging to the Sterling estate, Victoria, is a mountain of federal indictments," a clear, deep voice cut through the foyer.

I walked down the grand curved staircase, dressed in an immaculate black three-piece suit, hands resting casually in my pockets.

Victoria froze, pulling off her sunglasses, her face hardening into arrogant defiance. "Nathan. How predictable. You think you can use your money to steal my late sister's child? Clara created that embryo for our family. Under Swiss probate law, I am his legal guardian until he reaches majority!"

"Clara didn't create that embryo for you, Victoria," I said calmly, stepping off the bottom stair onto the marble. "She created it with my biological material twelve years ago under a contract that explicitly barred third-party transfer."

"That contract was voided upon her death!" Victoria snapped, waving a laminated legal brief. "I paid the surrogate! I hold the birth registry from Geneva! Hand over the child, or the marshal will place you under arrest for kidnapping!"

"Before the marshal executes that writ, Victoria," another voice echoed from the drawing room.

Detective Sarah Morgan and four armed federal agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation stepped into the foyer.

Victoria’s face paled slightly. "What is the FBI doing in a civil custody matter?!"
