Chapter 5 - The Intercept RoomBy 4:00 a.m., I sat in the command center at federal headquarters downtown, monitoring the live operation while keeping a direct line to Emily’s hospital room.

The wiretap logs provided by the sealed authorization hit a goldmine of evidence.

Derek’s criminal enterprise involved three state senators, two county judges, and a network of illicit shell companies handling illegal waste dumping and construction kickbacks across four states.

“He thought he was untouchable because he paid off the local sheriff,” Agent Vance remarked, reviewing the bank transfers scrolling across the monitors. “He didn't realize the Federal Organized Crime Task Force had been building this case for fourteen months.”

“He knew I was a judge,” I said softly, looking at my daughter’s medical charts. “He just assumed a mother’s fear would make me weak.”

At 5:12 a.m., my phone chimed with a message from the hospital: Emily had safely delivered a healthy six-pound baby girl.

I let out a long, quiet breath, tears of profound relief filling my eyes for the first time that night.
